This narrator does not have this same familiarity with the story as Esteban does and almost seems to be recalling the story from a distance. Additionally, this narration of someone from outside the del Valle family presents the female characters in a stronger light as their works are better presented.Īnother important literary device is the third person omniscient narrator that co-narrates with Esteban. A sense of family and genealogy is very important in this novel as the family is very close and readers become engrossed in the story lines of multiple family members. This type of narration gives readers a sense of being a member of their family. This is seen extremely early in novel when Esteban recalls, “…I would use her notebooks to reclaim a past and overcome terrors of my own,” (Allende 3). As a result of this first person point of view, the narration is very blunt and straightforward as if Esteban was speaking directly to the reader and gives his own opinions on various matters. Esteban is using a notebook that Clara del Valle had written in at the time that these events were occurring to retell the tale fifty years later. The first literary device that is the use of Esteban Trueba as one of the two narrators. These types of questions would not be presented in the same way without the intertwining of magical realism throughout the novel. For example, Rosa, the oldest daughter of the del Valle family, is known to be extremely gorgeous with green hair and transparent skin which opens the question to readers about how beauty is perceived and what it means to be beautiful. This style of writing is designed to give readers a new perspective of life as they know it and to question the real and the supernatural. This allows for the main characters of The House of the Spirits, which mainly happen to be women, to push their agendas in various ways. She uses elements of magic and the supernatural to fuel the plot line and to keep the readers in suspense. Allende’s conveys her message of the power of women and Latin American culture through the style of magical realism. ![]()
